We used Japanese Oak, which is excellent for fine carving, to make this sculpture of St Michael and the Dragon, a commission from St Michael’s, an early-19th-century church on top of a hill in the city of Exeter. We submitted a range of designs to the church, and sculpted a full-size clay model of their preferred sculpture before carving it in oak. The figure of St Michael is holding a metal spear, and was carefully designed to fit the niche in the church’s stone column. The base is made of English Oak and inscribed with the name of the man who donated the funds for the sculpture.
