Crucifix for St Clement’s Church, Eastcheap, London

This figure of Christ is carved in Field Maple, a hard, light-toned wood which is good for crisp carving, and nailed to an oak cross with a gilded and painted base. For the base, we matched the style and colours of the candlesticks on either side of the church altar. We made a full-size clay model of the figure of Christ, to our own design, then copied the model in wood and fixed it to the cross. The piece is about three foot high and is on the altar of St Clement’s, one of the churches in east London designed by Sir Christopher Wren to replace churches destroyed in the Great Fire of 1666.
